An excerpt
from Pioneer Girls
Carrie rocked back on her bare feet. Grace was unbuttoning
her dress. "What are you doin'?" she asked.
"Takin' off my dress," the lean girl said.
"I don't want to get it dirty. My ma will get mad."
Carrie fingered her own buttons. "Oh, that's a
good idea." She quickly undid her own dress buttons. In a couple
of minutes, both girls were completely naked.
They wandered around the meadow for a long while, enjoying
the summer sun more than they ever had in their clothes. They picked flowers
and played with a frog.
"I think I'm gettin' pink, Grace," Carrie
said at last. "I better put my dress back on."
Grace took her arm. "You're not gonna get a sunburn,"
she teased. "Don't be a such a girl!"
"What do you want me to be? A boy?" Carrie
gave a push and they tumbled into the grass. The nude young girls rolled
around in the warm, dry grass and laughed and wrestled until they were
exhausted.
Carrie lay on her back with her head in Grace's lap.
The older girl stroked her friend's hair and traced the line of her jaw
with a slender finger.
"What if you were a boy?" she asked
softly.
